Be A Bonner

It’s our favorite time of the year: we’re recruiting new Bonners! If you’re looking for ways to engage with the campus and community while developing your leadership and career skills, you might be one of us. If you’re a top academic performer who wants to learn through working with and on behalf of others, you might be one of us. If you want to graduate having made a real and measurable difference in your community, you might be one of us.

“I love the Bonner program because it’s given me a good group of friends, helped me find a rhythm in my freshman year, and given me the opportunity to earn money while making an impact I can see.” —Christian Madison, Sophomore Business Student
Bonners are active in the Honors College, all over campus, and at our partner locations—working to build a better Houston. In the 2014-2015 academic year, Bonners have built new projects at WALIPP Academy, César Chávez High School, and here on campus, as well as became the first Texas team ever to win the Resolution Project Social Venture Challenge at a Clinton Global Initiative University conference.

In return for their service, Bonners get to join a terrific community of high-performing students, and enjoy close working relationships with faculty and community leaders. Bonners who qualify for Federal Work Study also receive a stipend of up to $4,000 each year. Many Bonners also work toward Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards, which provide as much as $3,600 in relief from federal student loan debt. Beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year, many incoming Bonners (and Bonner Affiliates) will also be awarded the Provost Service Learning Scholarship.

If you’d like to join us, just complete the interest form at the bottom of this page, bearing in mind that you should also:

    • Apply for admission to both the University of Houston and the Honors College at the University of Houston.
    • Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 15th, taking careful note of your Expected Family Contribution (for use in the interest form below).
    • Be ready to commit to a four-year program that will help you meet your academic, personal, and career goals.
    • Plan to attend the Bonner Luncheon on Friday, April 24th.

Students who complete the interest form by April 15th will receive priority consideration.

Our team of student mentors will be in contact with you very soon after you complete the interest form, and they can help you understand the program, its work, and the role(s) you might play. We’re excited to be admitting our third class, and looking forward to another great year of service and academic excellence!
