2015 Co-Chairs

The Honors College was fortunate to have Honors alumnus John King and his wife, Julie, serving as co-chairs for this past year’s gala. A stellar Honors student in his day, John has gone on to become a Houston-based partner with Ernst & Young. Long-time residents of the city, he and Julie met during their studies at the Bauer College of Business. They have two wonderful children, Kendall and Jack; enjoy travel; and are active in a number of charitable endeavors focused on education and entrepreneurship.

“I thank you not only for the monetary support, but also for believing in the importance of a solid liberal arts education via the Honors College.”

Catherine Seitz

“I have read as well as heard of many aspiring scholars who cannot make it through college simply because they did not have the money, yet you — someone I have never met — is generous enough to put forward your money to pay for my tuition.”

Michael Chin

“Written words only partly capture my gratitude. The Great Conversation Scholarship comes at a pivotal time in my career as an accounting sophomore.”

Megan Iselin

“I’m a business major, and I am also doing pre-med. As you can probably already tell, I have big dreams, and this scholarship brings me so much closer to achieving them.”

Ifrah Farooq

“The Great Conversation Scholarship comes at a very intense time for me as a junior getting a B.S. in psychology. Your kindness has taken away some of the stress I would have experienced and has even allowed me to devote greater time to my future aspirations.”

Alicia N. Nichols

Celebrate 24 Years of Great Conversations
News

Conversation is the foundation of an Honors College education. Each year, more than 300 individuals come together for The Great Conversation, an award-winning fundraising event. It’s also our primary fundraising event. Proceeds from The Great Conversation provide Honors College scholarships and special support to Honors faculty and programs.

The Great Conversation has the same ideal as the Honors College itself: to foster thoughtfulness about and care for the world by engaging people in disciplined discussion about things that matter. Event topics are drawn from many areas of life, from arts and literature, history, religion, and public policy, to aspects of the city of Houston — just to name a few.

The event format allows all guests to be active participants. The evening begins with a reception and continues with a multi-course dinner paired with fine wine selections. During the meal, guests discuss a topic that has been predetermined for their table; the conversation is facilitated by a University of Houston faculty member or other expert. Guests are encouraged to indicate on their response card their preference for topics. On most occasions, guests can be accommodated at a table offering one of their top three conversation preferences.
